While many of Trump's Republican allies have found Comey's testimony credible, the president has called the man he fired a liar and a "leaker".

The early morning tweet was Trump's first response to Comey's testimony Thursday before a Senate committee in which he accused the president of lies and defamation. The "collusion" reference is apparently to the White House's long-running contention that there is no evidence Trump's campaign colluded with Russian attempts to undermine the election.

"What we're talking about is a sitting president of the United States and whether the administration took an action to fire the FBI director in a historic way because of a desire to take the pressure off the Russian Federation investigation", he told CNN.

Comey confirmed what Trump had said when he fired the FBI director last month: Comey had told the president on three different occasions that he wasn't the target of a criminal investigation.

Trump was expected to face journalists at the White House later Friday in a joint news conference with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis.

Legal experts have questioned Kasowitz's contention that Trump's private encounters with Comey should be considered privileged communications.

"I hardly know the man; I'm not going to say, 'I want you to pledge allegiance".

"I am not hinting at anything", Trump said, twice declining to elaborate. They sent a separate request to Trump's White House counsel, Don McGahn, for any record the White House had of their meetings.

Making his first appearance for NSW since 2014, Hayne picked up nearly right where he left off with an impressive display. Things went bad to worse for the Maroons as they conceded two tries in the space of 5 minutes.

Kasowitz also jumped on Comey's revelation that he had released details of his private conversations with the president, casting the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director as one of the "leakers" set on undermining the Trump administration.

The Comey has hearing generated a tidal wave of media coverage and analysis that will undoubtedly continue for many days.

The testimony would serve to strengthen Mr Comey's credibility with congress, Mr Gerhardt said, possibly at the expense of the president.

"We also were aware of facts that I can't discuss in an open setting that would make (Sessions') continued engagement in a Russia-related investigation problematic, " Comey told the Senate Intelligence Committee Thursday.

"Everybody is parsing the words of course, but I don't know that Comey's testimony strengthens or weakens an obstruction case", he said.

Trump at one point said he was "100 percent" willing to tell his story under oath, as Comey had.

President Trump's attorney reportedly plans to file a complaint over Comey's leak of privileged information. "I'll tell you about that maybe sometime in the very near future", he said.

Trump could not "let some guy like that smear him without punching him as hard as he can", Gingrich said.
