Former FBI director Robert Mueller, who has been drafted in to head the Bureau's probe into his relationship with Russian Federation, will reportedly also investigate the obstruction claims.

Wednesday evening saw a flurry of headlines about Trump being officially under investigation for obstructing justice.

President Donald Trump slammed special counsel Robert Mueller's expanding probe on Thursday, calling the inquiry into whether he obstructed justice a "phony story" and "the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history". He also told the Senate Intelligence Committee in his June 8 testimony that he believed Trump had directed him to drop a related agency investigation into the president's former national security adviser, Michael Flynn. Trump said, in an early morning tweet.

US President Trump is under FBI lens for obstruction of justice, the Justice Department's Special Counsel expanding an ongoing investigation into possible financial crimes among his associates with alleged ties to Russian Federation.

Trump followed with a tweet that seemed to further confirm that, yes, he is under investigation for possible obstruction.

In a later tweet, the President once again called the Russian Federation investigation a "witch hunt" and called the people leading it "very bad", apparently a reference to Mueller and others at the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Both presidents Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton were charged by Congress with obstruction of justice - Nixon resigned before he was impeached and Clinton was acquitted after he was impeached.

While the Justice Department appointed Mueller to investigate Russian efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election - and any "collusion" with the Trump campaign - his assignment also includes "any matters that arose or may arise" from the Russia probe.

"Trump had received private assurances from then-FBI Director James B. Comey starting in January that he was not personally under investigation".
