Stuart Cundy said that "we believe this number will sadly increase".

Prime Minister Theresa May ordered a public inquiry into the disaster, after coming under pressure as to whether the tragedy could have been prevented.

Police have said 17 people were killed in the blaze and that the death toll was likely to rise. Some people jumped to their deaths rather than face the flames, and witnesses reported seeing small children thrown from the tower by their families in a desperate bid to survive.

Families of the residents of the building have posted appeals for the whereabouts of their loved ones on social media.

Speaking in Downing Street, Mrs May said: "When it's possible to identify the cause of this fire, then of course there will be proper investigation and if there are any lessons to be learnt they will be, and action will be taken".

But experts suspect recent renovations at the Grenfell Tower, including newly installed external cladding, played a tragic role in spreading the fire so quickly. Gottardi told his father in separate calls that suffocating smoke in the stairs kept them inside their apartment and awaiting rescue.

The focus of criticism centres on the cladding fitted to external walls on the 1970s concrete block as part of a £8.7 million refit ($11 million, 9.9 million euros) completed previous year.

There is also uncertainty over how the project's adherence with building regulations was scrutinised. She said: "We need to know what happened".

Still, the political fallout from the tragedy intensified as Members of Parliament demanded to know why fire safety standards at the tower had not been more rigorous. "This is a major fire that's affected all floors of the 24-story structure from the second floor upwards". "There are flames around us", Trevisan told her mother in a farewell phone call thanking her for all she had done, family lawyer Maria Cristina Sandrin said.

In addition, 74 people were injured in the blaze, with 37 hospitalised and 17 of them still in critical condition.

Questions remain over how the fire began and how it spread so quickly through the tower that was home to as many as 500 people. As the day drew to an end, Rita also shared a photo of the destroyed remains of Grenfell Tower alongside a crying emoji.
