US Congressman Steve Scalise remains in critical condition after a second surgery but has shown improvement in the last 24 hours, MedStar Washington Hospital Center said in a press release.

"It's been much more hard than people even thought at the time", Trump said.

"Trump said he visited Scalise and his family Wednesday at the hospital and "reassured them that the entire country is pulling for them, praying for them and that we are here for them every single step of the way".

"Steve, in his own way, may have brought some unity to our long-divided country", he said. "An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us", Ryan said, to prolonged applause. "I have a feeling that Steve has made a great sacrifice, but there could be some unity being brought to our country".

A story worth watching: "Authorities in the District said Thursday that they have criminally charged a dozen members of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's security team who authorities say attacked protesters outside the ambassador's residence in May".

Scalise, who underwent a third surgery Thursday, is listed in critical condition after being shot through the hip.

The charity game pitting Republican lawmakers against their Democratic colleagues was set to proceed as scheduled at 7:05 p.m. (2305 GMT) at Nationals Park, home of the Washington Nationals Major League Baseball team, with thousands of spectators expected in the stands.

President Trump led off the game with a video message, and many of his staff and cabinet including his daughter Ivanka, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin, chief economic adviser Gary Cohn and counsel Kellyanne Conway were in attendance. The Capitol's usual partisan combativeness, though not absent, was less pointed than usual, and warm words were exchanged between some lawmakers with starkly opposing political philosophies.

House Republicans met privately earlier to discuss the shootings, pray and sign oversized cards for the wounded.

Across the Potomac River in Washington, the shocking events left the Capitol horrified and stunned, and prompted immediate reflection on the current hostility and vitriol in American politics. He is out of the hospital and was spotted off the House floor Thursday morning on crutches.

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi lashed out angrily at such comments. The van was parked in the YMCA lot next to the park where the attack took place.
