"I think there is a unity of goal among people in the United Kingdom", May said following a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday. Instead, she found the opposition Labour Party unexpectedly making a strong second-place showing and national politics thrown into disarray.

The Tories need the support of the DUP's 10 MPs in steering government business, including crucial measures on Brexit, through the Commons after failing to win a majority at the general election.

It comes as SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon voiced concerns over the prospect of a "grubby deal" between the Tories and the DUP showing "disregard" for the Northern Irish peace process.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn turned Mrs May's election slogans against her, claiming a link-up between the Tories and DUP would be a "coalition of chaos".

May is under pressure to take on a more cross-party approach to Brexit talks.

The European Union (EU) and the European Commission (EC) said in a joint statement that they have set a date to begin Brexit talks with the UK.

British Prime Minister Theresa May's Conservative party resumed talks on a deal to prop up her minority government on Wednesday as she faced a battle over her Brexit strategy just days before European Union divorce talks are due to begin.

"It continues and when the deal is done, it will be done", a senior source in the Conservative Party said yesterday.

"It takes two to tango and we're ready to dance", she said.

Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams said he wishes no harm to the Queen, after vowing none of his party's seven MPs will swear an oath to her.

Ministers have already said that the Queen's Speech, scheduled for 19 June, may have to be delayed because of the ongoing talks.

"Any deal which undercuts in any way the process here or the Good Friday Agreement is one which has to be opposed", he said.

Many pro-Brexit campaigners think there's nothing wrong with this option, arguing that a proper cost-benefit analysis should incorporate potential gains from trade deals eventually negotiated with non-EU countries. Her Conservative Party called such an arrangement "necessary" in its election manifesto.

Speaking as he arrived for a meeting of European Union finance ministers in Luxembourg, he said: "As we go into that negotiation, my clear view - and I believe the view of the majority of people in Britain - is that we should prioritise protecting jobs, protecting economic growth and protecting prosperity as we enter those negotiations and take them forward".

Grainne Teggart, campaigns manager for Amnesty International, said: "The UK Government has a responsibility to deliver abortion rights for women in Northern Ireland".

He also pointed out that three months after Article 50 had been triggered, formal discussions had yet to start.
