He says Carter is unlike the two homeless people who clearly created a danger by accidentally starting the fire and then not reporting it. Ryan says Conrad Roy was already a danger - to himself. He pointed specifically to her lack of contact with the police of the victim's family. "And finally, she did not issue a simple additional instruction: 'Get out of the truck'". Carter was released on bail, but is barred from contacting Roy's family and can not leave MA.

"The defendant's fate was sealed through the use of her own words", said Martin W. Healy, Chief Legal Counsel for the Massachusetts Bar Association.

Carter faces up to 20 years in prison as a result of the conviction.

Carter will be sentenced on August 3.

Both teens struggled with depression.

The 18-year-old MA native with a history of mental health problems and suicide attempts also left a note for his 17-year-old girlfriend Carter, who prosecutors say instigated his May 2014 suicide. Roy was found dead of carbon monoxide poisoning in his pickup truck.

The judge also said that Carter encouraged her boyfriend to follow through with suicide while fully aware of his previous failed suicide attempts, including when he tried over-dosing and when he tried downing himself. Carter wrote in one message. "She told him to get back into the vehicle and she knew he was going to die".

Roy's father said outside court that the family was pleased with the conviction.

"Mr. Roy's death is a awful tragedy, but it is not a reason to stretch the boundaries of our criminal laws or abandon the protections of our constitution". His death scene showed that the water pump was placed close to Roy's body, "thereby giving a good explanation to Ms. Carter's definition that the noise was loud within the truck".

"She is mindful that the process in the truck will take approximately 15 minutes", Mr Moniz said during Friday's hearing.

"Get back in", Carter told Roy, according to a friend who testified that Carter described the conversation in a text message to her about a month after Roy died.

"You can't think about it". "You're just making it harder on yourself by pushing it off, you just have to do it".

"Phones allow you to be virtually present", Rayburn said in concluding remarks.

Defense attorney Joseph Cataldo portrayed Carter as equally emotionally vulnerable and not in full control of her actions because of prescription psychiatric medication that left her with the delusion that she could help Roy by urging his death. Their relationship consisted mainly of texting and other electronic communications.

"This court, having reviewed the evidence, now finds you guilty on the indictment charging you with involuntary manslaughter", Moniz told the court.

According to AP, Carter cried as the judge explained his reasoning but was "stoic" as he read the verdict. Because Carter was a minor at the time of the crime, her trial was held in juvenile court.

Roy's family was seated near Carter in the front row of the courtroom.
