Mumbai/Kolkata: "Amid the fresh agitation for Gorkhaland in the Darjeeling hills, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday accused the Modi government of encouraging the stir and claimed there was a "deep-rooted" conspiracy" behind it.

The upswing in violence began when police raided the homes and offices of members of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), a separatist movement that has long called for a new state of "Gorkhaland" to be carved out of West Bengal.

He also claimed Vikram Rai, son of party MLA Amar Rai, had been arrested.

"Whatever is happening is a deep rooted conspiracy", Banarjee told reporters.

Mamata Banerjee tore into the GJM supporters and said that they aren't listening to the court, even after it had passed an order citing the bandh was "illegal".

"Central security forces were sent to Darjeeling and are already deployed and the Centre would send more if required", Rajnath told The Telegraph tonight.

The Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) has been insisting on a government order to clear the air on three language controversy, which triggered protests in Nepali-speaking sub-divisions of West Bengal.

Later in the day, the effects of the trouble were felt in Kalimpong's Gorubathan market where GJM supporters allegedly torched a vehicle of the power supply authority, while the Jaldhaka police station was vandalised. They shouted slogans demanding that the police and security personnel be "immediately removed" from Darjeeling.

He also took stock of the situation in Kashmir, where militants ambushed a police party on the outskirts of Anantnag district of South Kashmir today, killing six policemen.

The police further said that as many as 36 security personnel were injured in the clashed, DNA reported. "We want judicial inquiry into the firing".

Hinting that the unrest was Gurung's way of postponing the impending GTA elections, she said: "Five years you (GJM) enjoyed, now when elections are coming you start violence because you have lost credentials". They are only throwing bombs.

In another false alarm, this time raised by the CM no less; Banerjee claimed that protesters were threatening journalists to show certain clips and that some of her "media friends" had been kidnapped. "We can not tolerate this hooliganism", Sharma said.

The separatist stir in the hills, known the world over for producing aromatic tea, is fast turning into a major political headache for the Mamata Banerjee Government and is likely to cripple the tourism industry, critical to the region's economy.
