Mexico's Javier Hernandez, second from left, celebrates with teammates after scoring his side's first goal during the Confederations Cup, Group A soccer match between Portugal and Mexico, at the Kazan Arena, Russia, Sunday, .

"It's a dream to be playing with Ronaldo", Silva said ahead of Portugal's Confederation Cup debut against Mexico yesterday in Kazan, Russia.

However Portugal finally went in front in the 33rd minute when Ronaldo broke down the left and then squared the ball to Ricardo Quaresma, who rounded Ochoa and slotted the ball into an empty net.

The late drama took much of the focus away from Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo who, apart from the assist for Ricardo Quaresma's opener, failed to inspire his side.

Soares' goal had to be confirmed by video review but it eventually stood. The assistants duly looked it over, and awarded what looked to be a correct offside decision against Portugal, disallowing the goal.

The Euro 2016 winners took the lead on 34 minutes when Ronaldo sprinted into the box and his beautifully-timed pass found Quaresma unmarked in the area.

Ochoa made a great diving save in the 85th to keep young Portugal forward Andre Silva from scoring with a header.

But the assistant did not flag for the offense.

The referee was advised the video assistants were examining the goal and they spotted the offside player.
