It was a US Open to forget for Rory McIlroy after he failed to make the cut by four shots.

"More like 200mil. not bad for a "bored" 28 year old. plenty more where that came from", replied the Northern Irishman.

"Without Tiger the threshold is prolly 4 majors with 100mill in bank".

It might not be the end of this particular spat, however, it is the end of McIlroy in this year's US Open.

Elkington was watching the U.S. Open before he made a backhanded compliment about McIlroy. "Jack [Nicklaus] won 18 and never mentioned his total cash", Elkington responded.

He also said prize money was so poor in Nicklaus' day that the legend's main source of income was his golf course design business.

"That's why jack designed 100's of golf courses. and it's knew. mustn't have taught grammar in the 50's".

McIlroy has revealed that he intends to play in next week's Travelers Championship and the Irish Open, Scottish Open and Open Championship in successive weeks in July.

"I missed the cut, but I'm optimistic going forward".

An infrequent competitor on the Champions Tour, Elkington won 10 times on the PGA Tour, including the 1995 PGA Championship in a playoff over Colin Montgomerie.

McIlroy took a screenshot of his own Wikipedia page that lists all of his achievements that includes three European Golfer of the Year Awards, two PGA Player of the Year Awards and four majors won before adding that his worth is "more like $200 million".
