James Hodgkinson opened fire at the Congressional baseball practice on Wednesday morning, shooting four people and critically wounding majority whip Steve Scalise.

SUZANNE HODGKINSON: I had no idea this was going to happen, and I don't know what to say about it.

As congressional Republicans and Democrats joined Thursday night in their annual baseball game, played this year in Scalise's honor, word came from the hospital that he remained in critical condition, but had "improved in the last 24 hours". Police say the guns were legal, and he carried the required Illinois Firearm Owner's Identification card.

"He never bothered anybody that I knew of", Guetterman said, shaking his head in disbelief that someone living that close to him could do something like that.

Hodgkinson, who was armed with a handgun and a rifle, died from multiple gunshot wounds to his torso, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said.

Hodgkinson was a volunteer for the Bernie Sanders presidential campaign previous year and has comments on his social media accounts strongly criticizing President Trump.

The FBI said authorities are speaking with people who knew Hodgkinson or who may have encountered him. "We salute them, and we also salute members of Alexandria Police, Fire and Rescue", Trump said. Hodgkinson maintained a social media presence that was pro-Bernie Sanders and anti-Republican.

"You just wonder if he just flipped".

In his Times column, Parris said every move May makes will be scrutinised "for further confirmation of the flaws we think we've spotted".

Hodgkinson died from his injuries in a shootout with police.

Representatives Jeff Duncan (R-SC) and Ron DeSantis (R-FL) were leaving the baseball field when they were approached by a man, James Hodgkinson, who asked if it were Democrats or Republicans practicing on the field. "From everything we've known in our interactions with him, he never tipped off and gave any indication that he was violent in any way".

Hodgkinson had taken his van to the mechanic who works two blocks from the scene of the attack.

"I'm sorry that he did this but there's nothing I can do about it", she said.

On Tuesday, Hodgkinson broke his apparent silence at the garage.

In late March, days before Hodgkinson left town, Bill Schaumleffel called the St. Clair Sheriff's Office to complain about Hodgkinson firing his rifle toward houses when his grandchildren were outside.

"I wish I had some kind of clue that his hate was going to turn into a shooting", said Dauberman, the mechanic. Moments later, over 50 shots from a high-powered rifle were fired.
