Cosby initially settled with Constand in 2005 when she first reported the sex assault to police and filed a civil lawsuit after then-Montgomery County District Attorney Bruce Castor ruled against prosecuting the case.

Camille Cosby, the entertainer's wife of 53 years, slammed prosecutors for bringing the case to court, calling Steele "heinously and exploitively ambitious".

The comedian's lawyers maintained throughout the trial their client and Constand's sexual relationship was consensual.

He said Andrea Constand, the woman at the center of the case (she's accusing Cosby of drugging and sexually assaulting her in his Philadelphia home in 2004), is also on board and willing to testify again.

Approximately 60 accusations of sexual assault have been made against Cosby over a number of years, but only Constand's resulted in criminal charges because the other alleged incidents were too old to prosecute.

Smolla said the outcome of any civil case would depend on how jurors behave in terms of how seriously they take the case, how they relate to one another and how they deal with holdout jurors.

Even the former district attorney in the Constand case piled on, saying he thought Cosby lied to authorities.

The saturation coverage of Cosby's mistrial is sure to complicate jury selection. Constand was the women's basketball team manager at Cosby's alma mater. It's not unusual for them to have questions about evidence so they can use it to bolster their opinions, like the phone call between Constand's mother and the comedian, which seemed to be a major focus during deliberations in the past few days.

"I get emotional how hard you've worked", O'Neil said. According to him, it restored Bill Cosby's legacy. But on Saturday, moments after the mistrial was declared, he gave an inkling of his confidence level going into Round 2.

Social media erupted Saturday morning when news broke that Bill Cosby's sexual assault trial had ended in a hung jury.

"I have no authority to do this", Judge Steven O'Neill said in the 52nd hour of deliberations on Friday night. "As a very special friend once stated, 'Truth can be subdued, but not destroyed.'" Camille Cosby also thanked her husband's lawyers, other staff members, family and friends for their support.

The comedian was facing three charges of aggravated indecent assault.

With no decision in sight, the TV star thanked his fans and supporters - first in a tweet, then in brief comments as he left the courthouse late Friday. Cosby chose not to testify at trial.

There is, of course, also the possibility that jurors might simply disagree at to the weight of the evidence in a largely "he said, she said" case with little forensic evidence (e.g., the composition of the pills), or exactly what the judge's legalistic instructions mean when applied to the facts of this case.

Jewel Allison, a New York-based artist, poet and activist who has said Cosby drugged and sexually assaulted her in the 1980s, hugged Constand in the courtroom after the mistrial announcement. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article.
