Ex-minister warns May against Brexit betrayal

The Queen's Speech sets out details of extensive UK Government legislation required to put Brexit into effect, expected to include a Great Repeal Bill bringing European Union laws and regulations onto the British statute book, as well as bills on issues including immigration and customs.

"All the scenarios are on the table, including that of no agreement on March 29, 2019". The negotiations have been called the most complex in Britain's history as it unravels 44 years of membership and its threat to walk out with no deal in place has anxious European capitals. However, the shock result and loss of a Conservative majority has reopened the debate over what sort of Brexit Britain wants.

Summer Negotiations on the Brexit deal expected to continue in Brussels, with the Davis and Barnier teams meeting for one week in each month, before returning to base to report back and develop their positions.

Opponents describe that as a "hard Brexit". However, it faces the prospect of delivering a Queen's speech while still thrashing out a deal with Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party.

Mrs May has promised MPs a "take it or leave it" vote on whether to accept the deal or take Britain out of the European Union without agreement and fall back on World Trade Organisation rules.

While Britain's economy has shown unexpected resilience since the Brexit vote, there are signs of weakness.

'Everything is all over the place, ' said a senior executive responsible for Brexit preparations at a FTSE 100 company.

Opponents of Brexit fear that ditching a 60-year strategy of trying to hedge European integration with a special relationship with Washington or a brittle Commonwealth of former colonies would undermine what remains of Britain's global influence.

They include the status and rights of European Union citizens living in the United Kingdom and British citizens living in the European Union, the financial commitments the European Union expects Britain to pay as it leaves - the so-called "exit bill", and the question over the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

The extent of Britain's exit bill needs to be decided, with the EU27 expected to seek tens of billions of euros they see as London's fair share of programmes to which it has committed.

"If we had a strong signal that she were backsliding I think she would be in major difficulty", the newspaper quoted one unidentified former minister as saying.

The EU wants to deal with the first phase of divorce talks before moving on next year to discuss trade, though EU officials acknowledge that the agreements to be reached before Britain leaves can only be concluded as a whole package simultaneously.

Davis will lead a team of experienced negotiators to Brussels, confident that he can get a positive outcome and secure a new deep and special partnership with the European Union, said his spokesman.
