With Ronaldo looking at the peak of his game, Portugal trained for the first time in Russian Federation on Thursday ahead of its Confederations Cup debut against Mexico on Sunday.

Ronaldo has scored 18 goals in his last 11 matches, including two in Portugal's 3-0 win at Latvia in a European World Cup qualifier last week, the team's last match before the Confederations Cup opener against Mexico.

Cristiano Ronaldo, coming off a tumultuous week off the field, had set up Ricardo Quaresma's opening goal for Portugal, and Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez hit Mexico's equalizer just before halftime. Portugal will play Mexico in a Confederations Cup, Group A soccer match scheduled for.

Mexico continued to dominate as the second half went on, but they were finding it tough to break down the Portugal defence. If Mexico is bold, seeks possession and tries to be the protagonist in line with Osorio's philosophy, it will be a fascinating encounter against a Portugal team that won Euro 2016 in large part due to its defensive spine.

"Mexico has shown that it is a very good team, always playing attacking football", Alves said.

"We are calm and we have to think about the next game".

"In the end it was a well-deserved result after how we played today", Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio said.

Widespread reports have claimed that the forward wants to leave Spain as a result of a perceived lack of support from Madrid in the wake of allegations of tax fraud. "We faced the European champions, a team that plays at a very high level, and we played equal to them". Portugal had a first-half goal by Nani disallowed after a video review, when the game was still scoreless.

Ronaldo played well and made the first goal but did not score. Raphael Guerreiro miskicked a cross into the box, allowing Carlos Vela to play the ball back in for Hernandez to score. Lastly, having Mexican captain back Rafa Marquez will be important in terms of on-field leadership, coming off an injury in which he's only played 23 minutes since March, it's hard to see how much Mexico will get out of Marquez early in the tournament.

"Ronaldo is motivated", young Portugal forward Andre Silva said.

Selecao had the ball in the back of the net after 20 minutes through Pepe, but the Video Assistant Referee deemed the goal offside just moments before Ronaldo had struck the crossbar.
