Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said on Friday that Donald Trump was innocent of obstruction of justice because he is president - even though Gingrich led the charge in impeaching former President Bill Clinton in 1998.

Gingrich, after initially praising Mueller, has become a harsh critic.

"The Republicans are not focusing enough on the politics of individuals ... you don't write the bill and then try to go sell people", Gingrich said.

"I think the President is pretty confident that this is all going to come out in the wash and ultimately, he's still going to be president and this stuff is going to go away", said Speaker Gingrich. Yesterday, Trump himself confirmed that he is now under investigation for obstruction of justice for firing FBI director James Comey, after asking him to "lay off" the investigation into former adviser Michael Flynn's Russian ties.

He also seemed to accuse the U.S. deputy attorney general of pursuing a "witch hunt".

"I keep telling everybody at the White House, this is not like NY real estate law, this is criminal law", he said.

During his testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee last Thursday, former FBI Director James Comey said Sessions may have met for a third, undisclosed time, with Amb. "'This would be a lot more fun than a yacht.' And I thought, 'He's going to go'. We may not get anything on obstruction, but maybe there's going to be perjury".

Gingrich, who is out with a new book "Understanding Trump", was responding to reports Trump is under investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller for obstruction of justice. "This intensity has been building, I think, since election night".

Gingrich once praised Special Counsel Robert Mueller on May 17 as a "superb choice" and praised his reputation as "impeccable for honesty and integrity". And I think the answer is they want to lay the foundation to discredit whatever Bob Mueller comes up with.

"He is infuriated, and legitimately, in my judgment, by this whole Russian bologna", Gingrich said. He was reportedly a volunteer on the Bernie Sanders campaign and harbored a hatred for Trump and Republicans, according to his social media accounts.
