Indian escapes from Bali prison

Tracing all along the walls, one guard spotted a cover. Head of Kerobokan prison Tony Nainggolan said the inmates might have taken a week to build it.

"It is still being investigated whether they had escaped through the waste ground tunnel behind the clinic".

Kuta Police said Davidson was among the group alleged to have made a brazen escape sometime after 6am on Monday.

A search is underway to find the missing men.

All the men are serving time for various offences at Kerobokan's Bedugul block.

Iliev, 43, was serving seven-year sentence for money laundering, while King, 50, had been serving seven and a half for drug offences as well.

He's also wanted in Perth, Australia for drug charges and reportedly left the country for Indonesia on the same day that he was due to appear court.

Shaun Edward Davidson, from Perth, was serving a 12-month sentence after being convicted in September past year of using fraudulent travel documents.

When Davidson arrived in Bali in January 2015 he said he spent several months just "partying and boxing" before arousing the suspicion of authorities when he signed into a Kuta guest house under a passport with the name Michael John Bayman - claiming the photo was taken when he was "chubby".

He was sentenced to one year in prison and fined 100 million rupiah (AU$10,000), but he opted to serve extra five months instead of paying the fine.

After his sentencing at Denpasar Court past year, Davidson told AAP how he spent his first few weeks in custody crammed into a small cell with 20 other people.

Increased checks in the airport, port and bus terminals are being launched to apprehend the prisoners, who include Australian Shaun Edward Davidson.

"We have received a report about the four inmates escaping from the prison this morning", Mr Hananta said.

Last month, more than 440 inmates fled a jail in Pekanbaru City on the island of Sumatra after prison guards let them out of their cells to pray.
