Bill Cosby's lawyer repeatedly demanded a mistrial in his sex assault trial as five days of deliberations on the fate of the man once known as America's Dad pushed into Father's Day weekend, but the judge said there was no precedent to shut down the jury's talks.

Cosby was charged with three counts of aggravated indecent assault for allegedly drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand at her home - at his home - pardon me - in 2004. Was the case simply not as strong as prosecutors hoped? Cosby has denied any wrongdoing.

In their sixth day of deliberations, jurors sent word to Judge Steven T. O'Neill that they could not reach a unanimous verdict on the charges that, in 2004, Cosby had drugged and assaulted Andrea Constand in his Pennsylvania home.

Dennis McAndrews, a prosecutor in the John DuPont murder trial, says he didn't expect the Cosby case to end in a mistrial, although knew it would be challenging for the jury.

But the jurors clearly struggled with their verdict, telling the judge on Day 4 they were at impasse.

Cosby's spokesman, Andrew Wyatt, told reporters that the trial's outcome had "restored" his client's legacy.

As if to demonstrate just how firmly the battle lines have been drawn in this case, Cosby's camp gave no sign that they would give in to speculation over his past relationships with women.

District Attorney Kevin Steele holds a news conference after a mistrial in Bill Cosby's sexual assault case in Norristown, Pa., Saturday, June 17, 2017. He said Constand "is entitled to a verdict in this case and the citizens of Montgomery County, where this crime occurred, are entitled to a verdict in this case".

Steele said he and prosecutors Kristen Feden and M. Stewart Ryan "will evaluate and review" the case.

Edward Gillespie wins Virginia's GOP primary for governor
The close Republican result shocked many political watchers and shows Trump's enduring appeal among Republican voters in Virginia. Northam won the Democratic nomination handily enough that the Associated Press called his victory just after 8:00 p.m.

On Friday, Bill Cosby thanked the jury for their honest work.

Shortly after a mistrial was declared in the sexual assault case against comedian his wife of 53 years, Camille Cosby, lashed out on Saturday at the courts and media. They attacked the judge, in a letter from Cosby's wife Camille, as "arrogant" and Steele as "heinous" and "ambitious".

From defense attorney Brian McMonagle: "There were no winners here but like the song goes you don't always get what you want but if you try sometimes. you get what you need".

Former teen actor Barbara Bowman told her story to many media outlets in the years after Constand went public.

A lawyer on the case recalled her startling account of being drugged and sexually assaulted by Cosby, but his notes revealed a glaring discrepancy in the account. "She believes things happen for a reason".

Legal experts had always warned that the "he said, she said" nature of the case was going to be hard to prove in court, not least because it happened so long ago and lacked physical evidence.

"We can never underestimate the blinding power of celebrity, but justice will come", said Gloria Allred, an attorney who represents many of Cosby's accusers. Johnson alleged that Cosby drugged and molested her at a Los Angeles hotel bungalow in 1996.

A decade later, another district attorney reopened the investigation after his lurid deposition became public, and dozens of women came forward against one of the most beloved stars in all of show business.
