The BJP President also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally spoke to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and conveyed to them the NDA's choice. All allies of the BJP have also been informed of its decision, said Mr Shah.

Since past week, the party's committee has been engaging in fierce negotiations over the name of the candidate which will most likely garner maximum support from across the board.

With the support of regional parties like the TRS of Telangana and the AIADMK of Tamil Nadu, the BJP should be easily able to get Governor Kovind elected if the opposition decides to put up its own candidate.

71 year old Kovind is a Dalit leader from Kanpur. Among those in attendance in the meeting were BJP national president Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley and Venkaiah Naidu.

He said the BJP and the National Democratic Alliance had been discussing the Presidential election for long.
