The BJP President also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally spoke to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and conveyed to them the NDA's choice. All allies of the BJP have also been informed of its decision, said Mr Shah.

Since past week, the party's committee has been engaging in fierce negotiations over the name of the candidate which will most likely garner maximum support from across the board.

With the support of regional parties like the TRS of Telangana and the AIADMK of Tamil Nadu, the BJP should be easily able to get Governor Kovind elected if the opposition decides to put up its own candidate.

71 year old Kovind is a Dalit leader from Kanpur. Among those in attendance in the meeting were BJP national president Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley and Venkaiah Naidu.

He said the BJP and the National Democratic Alliance had been discussing the Presidential election for long.

Hailing from Uttar Pradesh, Kovind has in the past also served as BJP SC Morcha president.

In the year 1997 some Government Orders were issued by the Central Government which adversely affected the interests of employees of the Scheduled Castes/Tribes, Kovind joined the movement of SC/ST employees against the Central Government and consequently succeeded in getting those Government Orders null and void by the passage of three Amendments in the Constitution of India during the first NDA regime. With numbers already with BJP, the challenge for the Modi government is to find a name which can successfully fight the opposition set in tone to oppose and fight the election on 17 July 2017, five days before the incumbent of current President's term expires.

Bihar Governor Ramnath Kovind is known for his proximity with Home Minister Rajnath Singh but has also been a hardcore supporter of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's demonetization drive that eliminates black money and corruption in the society. Shri Kovind represented India in United Nations (New York) and addressed United Nations General Assembly in October, 2002.

The top party leaders are expected to filter a name for the top post as President Pranab Mukherjee's term will come to an end in July.

Earlier, he headed the party's Dalit base and groomed several leaders for the BJP and the RSS.
