One arrest after vehicle hits people outside of London mosque

Eyewitnesses reported seeing a group of people giving an emergency heart massage to one man before the attack happened.

"Pull his head up, pull his head up", one man yells.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan released a statement early Monday calling the incident "a horrific terrorist attack".

Scotland Yard said he was arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of terrorism including murder and attempted murder. Three Islamic extremists who carried out the attack were killed by police.

"Given we are approaching the end of the month of Ramadan and the celebration of Eid with many Muslims going to local mosques, we expect the authorities to increase security outside mosques as a matter of urgency".

Prime Minister Theresa May described the crash as a "terrible incident". "We got told to move straight away", another witness said.

"Within a minute, a van with speed turned to where we were and ran over the man who was laying on the floor and the people around him", said an eye-witness.

The driver has been arrested, and the Counter Terrorism Command team has been brought in to investigate possible ties to terrorism.

Abdulrahman Saleh Alamoudi, who was at the Muslim Welfare House last night, said he was among a group of people helping an elderly worshipper who had fallen down, possibly due to the heat, when the van swerved towards them.

One person is dead, and at least ten others were injured, after a van crashed into pedestrians outside a London mosque.

Eyewitness Abdul Rahman told BBC News that he tackled the driver to the ground - with the help of other people - as he tried to run from the scene.

"While this appears to be an attack on a particular community, like the bad attacks in Manchester, Westminster, and on London Bridge, it is also an assault on all our shared values of tolerance, freedom and respect", Khan tweeted.

Britain's terrorist alert has been set at "severe" meaning an attack is highly likely.

Witnesses said the road was "backed up" with police cars, ambulance and fire engines.

"While this appears to be an attack on a particular community, like the awful attacks in Manchester, Westminster and London Bridge it is also an assault on all our shared values of tolerance, freedom and respect", Khan said.

"This was an attack on Muslims near their place of worship..."
