Scalise upgraded from critical to serious

Senior US Republican congressman Steve Scalise is showing sign of improvement and is speaking with loved ones after being shot at a baseball game near Washington, DC last week.

"The Scalise family greatly appreciates the outpouring of thoughts and prayers", MedStar Washington Hospital Center said in a statement released on behalf of his kin, reports CNN.

The 66-year-old of Belleville, Illionis, opened fire early Wednesday morning at an Alexandria, Virginia, baseball field where GOP lawmakers were practicing for an upcoming charity baseball game.

The gunman, identified by authorities as James Hodgkinson, died of wounds he sustained during a shootout with police.

Nonetheless, said Sava, "We fully expect him to be able to walk" and "hopefully run".

However, the former world number one added: "I remember this pressure in the past, because I take time before I serve". Djokovic was soon back in control, though, and wrapped up victory with a cross-court forehand victor .

Doctors immediately performed surgery, but additional operations will be required, the hospital said in the late-night statement . The surgeon on Friday said he was "a lot more confident and optimistic" about Scalise's recovery than he was two days ago.

Scalise was shot in the hip, and the bullet damaged bone, blood vessels and internal organs.

Sava said he told Scalise's family that "I am not declaring victory until he's playing ball in his back yard with his family".

"The congressman's status remains critical", Jack Sava, director of trauma at MedStar Washington Hospital Centre.

The president said that because of the "tremendous pain and suffering he's now enduring. our country will perhaps become closer, more unified". Predicting the length of that hospital stay will be much easier after a few more days have passed. He added that Scalise would be in the hospital "for some time" and would need "a period of healing and rehabilitation" after being discharged.

Lobbyist Matt Mika was shot multiple times and critically injured.

Mika also remained hospitalized Saturday after undergoing an additional surgery.
