"I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director!"

Benjamin Wittes, who runs the Lawfare blog and is known to be a friend of James Comey, said in a new interview that President Trump's private dinner with the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director amounted to "grotesque impropriety".

The Washington Post story cited five officials who had been briefed on interview requests from special counsel Robert Mueller with three top intelligence officials to see if Trump had attempted to obstruct justice. The natural interpretation of that statement is that the president is, in fact, under investigation - but Trump attorney Jay Sekulow said Sunday that is not the case.

Barak Cohen, a former Justice Department lawyer and now a defence attorney specialising in white-collar crime and investigations, said there was no requirement that the special counsel notify Trump he was under investigation, so the lack of such notice meant nothing.

Mueller is also looking at whether, if any potential offenses were committed, Trump or others attempted to cover them up or obstruct the investigation into them, said one USA official on Thursday who is familiar with the rough outlines of the probe and who spoke on condition of anonymity.

President Donald Trump is beginning his day with a stream of tweets defending his record and lashing out at the investigation into Russian interference in the election.

"You've now said that he's being investigated", Wallace said.

A source familiar with the matter told CNN's Evan Perez that investigators for Mueller would speak with Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and National Security Agency Director Mike Rogers. "Witch Hunt." The message apparently referred to Rod Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general whose role leading the federal investigation has become increasingly complicated. "The best thing that could happen for the president, and the country, is a full and credible investigation".

Donald Trump not under investigation for obstruction, says lawyer
This is a very complex matter, involving thousands of pages of intelligence documents, lots of witnesses. Sekulow said Trump "thought it was in the best interest of the American people" to fire Comey.

The president suggested on Twitter that he may have taped conversations.

He said, however, that Sekulow's comments could mean the White House was taking the position that no investigation exists until Mueller's team officially confirms it, disregarding media reports based on anonymous sourcing.

The panel sent a bipartisan letter this month to White House counsel Don McGahn seeking an answer by this Friday. It also sent a letter to Comey asking for any notes or memos.

Schiff says if the panel can't get an answer then he believes a subpoena will be needed.

Wittes, who penned an op-ed in the Times after Trump fired Comey in May, told BuzzFeed that reading the newspaper's reporting on the dinner put helped him understand conversations he had with Comey.

"That signifies this president knew all too well that it was inappropriate", Schiff said.

Both Coats and Rogers declined before the Senate intelligence committee earlier this month to answer questions about their conversations with Trump, but both said they had never felt urged by Trump to intervene in the Russian Federation probes. Angus King, an independent from ME, stressed that the probe will likely last for a long time.

"You just said he's being investigated", Wallace noted. This is a very complex matter, involving thousands of pages of intelligence documents, lots of witnesses.

He spoke on ABC's "This Week".
