Three Army Rangers Killed in Afghanistan in "Insider Attack"

Gen. John W. Nicholson Jr., the top US military commander in Afghanistan, wants 3,000 to 5,000 more troops to help train Afghanistan's military and police forces as they battle Taliban insurgents, Islamic State militants and other militias, USA officials say.

Two U.S. soldiers have been killed and two others wounded in an attack by an Afghan soldier in eastern Afghanistan, according to the Associated Press.

"On my way here I was informed that U.S. service members were killed and wounded in the attack in Afghanistan", he said. An estimated 400 to 700 ISIS-K militants are active throughout Nangarhar and Kunar provinces, officials said in late-April after three USA special forces soldiers died in separate incidents there. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of American heroes". -Afghan military operation in the Achin district of Nangarhar province, the provincial governor's spokesperson said. One US serviceman was injured and evacuated from Afghanistan and was taken for medical care.

The district is also where the U.S. dropped one of its most powerful bombs earlier this month, killing close to 100 ISIS fighters, according to Afghan officials. Another official, Bashir Ahmad Shakir, head of the provincial council's security committee, said that other reports, not yet confirmed, said that as many as eight policemen had been killed.

Mike Pence, The US Vice President, speaking in the state of Wisconsin, noted that President Donald Trump had already been informed about what had happened.

A statement from the USA military said merely that the military was "aware of an incident in eastern Afghanistan". Although military officials say the group is far smaller than it was at its height in 2015, an estimated 600 to 800 militants located mainly in remote mountainous areas continue to pose an ample threat to US and Afghan troops.

Spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed on Twitter that four United States soldiers were killed in the attack.

"We can confirm personnel from the Afghan National Defence and Security Forces were killed and wounded during overnight operations in Helmand province".

She adds that shootings like the one that occurred Saturday "are called insider attacks - or green on blue - with Afghans wearing green shooting Americans and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation soldiers".

The killings have bred fierce mistrust between local and foreign forces even as the rate of such incidents has dropped in recent years.

American troops, including special forces, also carry out separate counterterrorism missions.

The latest killings come at a time of intensified violence and when the USA is considering sending more troops to Afghanistan.
