Trump lashes out at 'phony story'

Grassley's office said the letter is in response to a recent letter from Feinstein requesting that the committee seek details from senior Federal Bureau of Investigation leadership about Comey's interactions with President Donald Trump before he was sacked.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has privately told colleagues that he may have to recuse himself from the Russian Federation probe, according to ABC News. Trump initially used that memo along with a recommendation from Sessions to justify firing Comey.

Mueller took over the DOJ Russia probe after a chain of events set in motion by Trump, Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

US President Donald Trump lashes out at Hillary Clinton and the media following reports he is under investigation for possible obstruction of justice.

Trump demonstrated Friday morning that the Russian Federation probe continues to consume his attention, tweeting a stream of messages decrying the controversy.

Former FBI director James Comey told Congress last week he believed Mr Trump fired him in May to undermine the agency's Russian Federation investigation. "Nice", Trump wrote in his first tweet. Comey said he told the president on three occasions that he wasn't personally under investigation.

Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House intelligence committee, would not comment on whether Mueller was looking at possible obstruction of justice by Trump but said Congress "certainly needs to get to the bottom" of the issue. Dick Durbin said Friday that President Donald Trump will put the country at the "brink of a constitutional crisis" if he fires special counsel Robert Mueller.

But Mr Rosenstein, too, may ultimately have to end his oversight, given his role in Mr Trump's decision to fire Mr Comey.

The White House has directed questions to outside legal counsel, which has not responded.

Citing "US sources familiar with the matter", The Washington Post reported Thursday that the business dealings of additional former members of Trump's team, including his campaign's chairman, Paul Manafort, ousted security adviser Michael Flynn and ex-security adviser Carter Page, have also come under scrutiny. "Witch Hunt", the president wrote in his tweet.

Mueller continues to hire a team of lawyers, and with FBI investigators is gathering information that is widely expected to lead to a formal investigation into whether President Trump attempted to interfere in the investigation. When Comey testified last week, he also gave the committee and Mueller a document that involved Comey taking notes of his communications with President Trump. With just about a week to go before India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled arrive in Washington to meet Trump on June 26, the United States capital is awash with intrigue and suspense, with frequent parlor talk about if and when Trump will throw in the towel and the prospect of a "President Pence".

Later in the day, he tweeted: "Why is that Hillary Clintons family and Dems dealings with Russian Federation are not looked at, but my non-dealings are?"

Mr. Trump's morning tweets included what seemed like a jab at former FBI Director Robert Mueller, the new Special Counsel for the Russian Federation probe, as he said the investigation was being "led by some very bad and conflicted people!"
