Vidal, Vargas help Chile defeat Cameroon amid VAR controversy

Sanchez's uncanny combination with Vidal bore fruit for Chile yet again, as he sent in a perfectly weighted cross from the left for Vidal to head home in the 81st minute.

Chile continued to dominate the encounter and finally broke the deadlock 10 minutes from time when Vidal met substitute, Alexis Sanchez's cross with a powerful header.

And nine minutes later, after a great play by Sanchez, Vargas scored only to have the referee nullify it, although the VAR replay showed clearly that the goal was legitimate and it was awarded to the Chileans.

"At the end of the first half we could have been 1-0 up but 20 minutes later we were still level and that made the players disappointed".

Despite watching his team concede on a video review in its first Confederations Cup game since 2003, Cameroon coach Hugo Broos was enthusiastic about the system.

Chile will look to the likes of Arturo Vidal and Alexis Sanchez to fire them to victory, and will be favorites to prevail in this match.

Cameroon keeper Fabrice Ondoa largely kept his side in the game with some fantastic reflexes to keep a Chile attacking three of Vargas, Edson Puch and Jose Fuenzadila at bay.

The 27-year-old was flabbergasted to see the linesman's flag raised, but video replays showed that Sanchez was onside in the build-up and Vargas' 34th global goal was given.

The Cameroonians got the ball in the net once, but the whistle had already gone for a foul on Vidal by the time Michael Ngadeu Ngadjui headed the ball into the net at a 17th-minute free kick. The last test match for Cameroon took place on June 13, in which they lost to Colombia with a score of 0: 4.

The African champions came closest when captain Benjamin Moukandjo hit narrowly wide with a shot from the edge of the penalty area midway through the second half.

However, it may be a little spoiled by the fact that because of problems with the back in the match, the main goalkeeper of Chileans Claudio Bravo cannot take part.

"I think this system needs time".
