1 struggles to survive as more caught in NC rip currents

A man rescued from the water in Atlantic Beach Sunday has died.

It happened behind the Double Tree hotel, about 100 yards from the boardwalk.

"We looked out, saw him floating face down, unfortunately, in the waves, ran out, brought him up to the beach and started doing CPR on him", Smith said.

At last check, the female victim was still at Carteret Health Care. She is expected to recover, and has since been released.

That rip current death is the second in just over a week along the Crystal Coast.

"Days like today I would even consider not going in", Smith said. They were among five people caught in a rip current. "Sometimes not very far is too far".

Two young men are struggling to recover after almost drowning in an ocean rip current off the North Carolina coast.

And there was another fatality the weekend before. The man was attempting to rescue two teenage girls who were caught in a rip current.

Officials say forecasting rip currents and the science behind how they form is important, but they also say that swimmers need to know their limits and when to stay out of the water.

"We are at about 20 to 25 rescues from ..."

The red flags warning of risky conditions remain posted at the protected lifeguard area near the Atlantic Beach circle. "May 24 until today", Snyder said. "And added on to that, if you get stuck in the breaker, in the rollers, and the rip current, you get in a very bad situation".

"If you've got high rollers and large breakers coming in, they look like they're a lot of fun to swim in but they can be very risky", he said.
