Condition of United States lawmaker shot by anti-Trump gunman improves to 'serious'

Congressman Steve Scalise has undergone another surgery as he recovered from Wednesday's shooting in Alexandria, Virginia.

U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise underwent an additional surgery on Saturday and his condition was upgraded to "serious", three days after he was shot in the hip when a gunman opened fire at a Republican congressional baseball practice, hospital officials said.

Mr Scalise was shot as he fielded at second base during practice for an annual Republicans-Democrats baseball game.

James T. Hodgkinson, was killed by police after the Wednesday shooting rampage. The injuries had put the majority whip at an "imminent risk of death", said Jack Sava, director of trauma care for MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

"He continues to show signs of improvement", the statement said.

Scalise was sedated Friday, but the husband and father of two has been able to respond to his doctors and family. "He is more responsive and is speaking to his loved ones".

Speaking from the White House Monday night, President Trump announced Otto had died after coming home from North Korea in a coma. On March 16, 2016 Otto was sentenced to 15 years of hard labour by the North Korean supreme court for his transgressions.

The president said that because of the "tremendous pain and suffering he's now enduring. our country will perhaps become closer, more unified".

Scalise "sustained a single rifle wound that entered in the area of the left hip", Sava said, adding that the round fragmented and did "substantial damage to bones, internal organs and blood vessels".

"On behalf of Steve and our children, I want to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for the incredible amount of prayers and warm wishes we have received since Wednesday's events", Scalise's wife, Jennifer, said in a statement Friday.

Two Capitol police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, as well as House Republican aide Zack Barth were injured, but have been released from hospital.

Griner remains hospitalized at MedStar Hospital after getting shot in the ankle, and Sava described her in good condition.

Known to "just dive big into life", Scalise started to feel more like himself on Saturday, when he cheered for his alma mater Louisiana State University's baseball team on Twitter, saying, "Tigers win!"
