Expressing surprise at the BJP's decision to name Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind as the NDA's presidential candidate, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday claimed she has never heard of the nominee and termed it a "not so mature" move.

He said he was a "small citizen" entrusted with a big responsibility.

Prime Minister Modi took to Twitter and, in a series of tweets, said, "Shri Ram Nath Kovind, a farmer's son, comes from a humble background".

Educated in London School of Economics and an IFS officer, Narayanan's qualifications may be more impressive but Kovind too was a diligent student and had reportedly cracked the prestigious UPSC examination but opted out as he did not get the service of his choice. Yechury said,"Ram Nath Kovindji RSS ke Dalit sakha ke pramukh thay, wo ek rajneeti hua na".

"As of now this is the priority", said one senior general secretary of the party, anxiously keeping an eye on the news, for any indications on the opposition's strategy. The Dalit leader from Kanpur was elected twice to the Rajya Sabha: 1994-2000 and 2000-2006. "This is not a very mature decision", she said.

"If the government accepts the Ranganath Mishra Commission recommendations, the convert Christians and Muslims would become eligible to contest on seats reserved for Scheduled Castes. If UPA fields another Dalit as presidential candidate, what stand he will take?" asked Mishra.

Sources say a united Opposition could project either former Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar or former Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde - both Dalit leaders from Congress - as their joint nominee for the July 17 polls. So, there is no question of mutual consent. But instead of coming to us with the proposal they announced the candidate.

President Pranab Mukherjee has accepted the resignation of Kovind as the governor of Bihar, a communique issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan said on Tuesday. A communication from the chief minister's office said the prime minister requested Naidu to garner the support of the Trinamool Congress for the NDA candidate.

Kovind was declared the NDA candidate on Monday after a meeting of the BJP Parliamentary board. "But since they have chosen some other name, the party will convey to the BJP our decision soon".
