"Doctors are happy with the progress he's made", Scalise's press secretary, Lauren Fine, tells PEOPLE.

Mr Scalise was airlifted to hospital in shock, with intense internal bleeding, Dr Sava said.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise was upgraded from critical to serious condition Saturday night following another surgery after a shooting at a Republican congressional baseball practice Wednesday where five people were shot. The gunman, James T. Hodgkinson, was fatally shot by police.

If Scalise did not suffer nerve damage and his recovery continues without any complications, "it is possible that within three months or so, he can ... be back on his feet", said Dr. Alex Jahangir, an orthopedic trauma surgeon at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, who was not involved in Scalise's care. "A lot of folks have been affected by this".

As congressional Republicans and Democrats joined Thursday night in their annual baseball game, played this year in Scalise's honor, word came from the hospital that he remained in critical condition, but had "improved in the last 24 hours".

The hospital said Scalise underwent another surgery Saturday to treat the gunshot wound.
