USA congressman's condition improves but still critical after shooting

Doctors at MedStar Washington Hospital Center say that since U.S. Rep Steve Scalise arrived there after he was shot in the hip Wednesday morning, "excellent" recovery is now a "good" possibility and that they expect him to walk again.

Medstar Washington Hospital Center released the update on behalf of the Scalise family.

The hospital said Scalise underwent another surgery Saturday to treat the gunshot wound.

"Most importantly, we are forever grateful for the heroism of Special Agents Crystal Griner and David Bailey, who saved the lives of everyone at the baseball field that morning, including Steve's", Scalise's wife, Jennifer, said in the statement.

President Donald Trump visited Scalise at the hospital Wednesday night and later said in a speech, "He's a great fighter and he's going to be OK, we hope".

The doctor said Scalise has been sedated although the dosage has been turned down to allow him to respond to family members.

Trump said Friday his "dear friend", Scalise, "took a bullet for all of us". "We are encouraged by improvement in his condition over last 36 hours".

Sava said Friday that there are hundreds of bullet fragments in Scalise's body, but "we have no intention to try and remove all the bullet fragments at this point". Griner remains hospitalized at MedStar Hospital after getting shot in the ankle, and Sava described her in good condition.

Scalise was the first sitting member of Congress to be shot since Democrat Gabby Giffords was wounded in January, 2011 as she held a constituent meet-and-greet in her Arizona district.

Two other people were injured, and the shooter, James T. Hodgkinson, died of his injuries sustained in the firefight. Mika, a lobbyist for Tyson Foods and former congressional aide, is expected to remain in intensive care at George Washington University Hospital through the weekend.

Another victim of the shooting, Matt Mika, has undergone an additional surgery and shown "positive results", according to a statement released by his family.
