Effort to shield some from deportation stays

Trump paired the action with an announcement it is withdrawing a second Obama-era program that would have protected from deportation as many as five million additional undocumented immigrants who are the parents of USA citizens.

DAPA would have allowed parents of undocumented children to stay, but never took effect since it has been hung up in legal battles since being penned back in 2014.

However, it was quickly challenged in court by Republican-governed Texas and 25 other states that argued Obama had overstepped the powers granted to him by the US Constitution by infringing upon the authority of Congress.

DHS spokesman David Lapan said the date was merely "coincidental" and stemmed from the fact that a litigation conference scheduled for Thursday forced the government's hand to make a decision on the future of DAPA.

Kelly's act fulfills part of a campaign promise that President Trump had made to overturn two of Obama's controversial memos on illegal immigration. Homeland Security John Kelly formally revoked a policy memo that created the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans programme. The program applies to children who were brought to the United States illegally.

President Donald Trump had campaigned on promises to repeal immigration reform, including DAPA and DACA. He vowed to end them immediately.

The White House says it continues to study DACA.

"Yesterday's action by the administration also acknowledges that granting de facto amnesty to millions of people who knowingly violated US immigration laws is also bad public policy that harms the interests of the American people and encourages more illegal immigration", Stein said in a statement.

"Their situation is not ameliorated at all", said Nina Perales of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund, which represents three undocumented women from the Rio Grande Valley in the DAPA case. That provision was also blocked by the Texas judge.

Some civil rights groups criticized the timing of Kelly's announcement, which coincided with the anniversary of Plyler v. Doe, the 1982 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that declared children are entitled to receive a free public K-12 education in the United States regardless of their immigration status.

However, Trump has seemed to reverse his stance on DACA, as The New York Times reported today (June 16).

Trump made his feelings on then-President Barack Obama's immigration efforts very clear while he was running for office.

Arrests of immigrants in the interior of the country have increased under the Trump administration.
