The investigations at Grenfell Tower have led police to believe the "number of people missing, but as yet unaccounted for" has risen from 58, the Metropolitan Police said.

The latest figure included the previously released number of 30 deaths in the catastrophe in North Kensington early Wednesday.

The search and recovery operation in the 24-story Grenfell Tower continues, he said, adding that it has been incredibly distressing for families.

Cundy said investigators are looking at how the building was constructed, a recent refurbishment, maintenance and fire safety measures.

The police chief, who went inside the charred shell of the high-rise tower over the weekend, told reporters: "I've investigated major crime for most of my service and I've seen some bad things but I don't think anything prepared me for what I was going to see when I was in there".

Britain held a moment of silence for the victims on Monday, with emergency service workers at the site of the fire bowing their heads in respect.

Cladding used on Grenfell Tower is banned in Britain, the Chancellor has said as Government staff were drafted in to handle the response to the disaster.

As NPR's Merrit Kennedy reported, the Grenfell Tower fire has aroused the ire of those who feel it was caused by corporate malfeasance and who feel Prime Minister Theresa May's government is not doing enough to respond.

A woman walks by missing person posters near The Grenfell Tower block, destroyed by fire, on Friday.

She said the Government would offer resources beyond the £5m already committed to helping those displaced by the fire if necessary, and announced a deadline of three weeks for families to be found another home "nearby" to the Kensington area of the fire.

At a daily briefing with reporters, May's spokeswoman said the terms of reference of a public inquiry into the tower blaze were being drafted.

British health authorities will also provide long-term bereavement counselling for those who lost loved ones in the tragedy.
