Tour Guides Say They Will Scale Back Trips to North Korea

In a press release, Rep. Tom Garrett (R-Va.) shared his condolences for the death of University student Otto Warmbier and denounced the North Korean regime that detained Warmbier for 17 months. Politicians renewed calls for the regime to release three U.S. citizens being held in the country.

Relatives have said they were told by US envoys that North Korean officials claimed Warmbier contracted botulism after his trial and lapsed into a coma after taking a sleeping pill.

There was no immediate word from the family about why relatives opted not to perform an autopsy, which may have shed more light on the cause of the neurological injuries Warmbier suffered in North Korea.

Last week, Tillerson told a Senate hearing that China's efforts on North Korea had been "uneven".

The death last week of American student Warmbier, who fell into a coma after being arrested in North Korea, has raised questions about whether his tour agency was adequately prepared for its trips into the hard-line communist state.

USA spy satellites have detected new activity at North Korea's underground nuclear test site for the first time in several weeks, two United States officials told CNN. When a senior U.S. official visits North Korea, it is usually taken as a sign that tensions between the adversaries are easing somewhat.

The U.S. and China began high-level security talks Wednesday focused largely on North Korea, amid outrage in Washington over death of an American college student after his imprisonment in the North.

One Trump administration official said bluntly they didn't know what Trump was referencing when asked what the tweet meant.
