Hodgkinson did not have any ties to terrorism, said Tim Slater, the special agent in charge of the Washington FBI office, during a news conference. However, there was "no context" included in the list.

The legislation gives the authority to appoint new medical directors at VA hospitals, something that was almost impossible to do in the past, the president said.

The FBI also said that Hodgkinson visited a storage facility in Alexandria more than 43 times between April and June. Most days, he would arrive between 6 and 7 a.m.

The Louisiana Republican has undergone several surgeries since he was shot last week. He began shooting at the lawmakers just after 7am.

According to Slater, Hodgkinson kept a storage unit in Alexandria where investigators found 200 rounds of ammunition.

On a piece of paper, he had written the names of six members of Congress, but Slater said it didn't seem like a hit list.

Hodgkinson had been involved in a protest in Belleville, Ill., where he was living outside a USA post office building.

Investigators believe Hodgkinson had been living out of his van parked near the baseball field since late March after traveling to the area from his home in Belleville, Ill.

Trump slams Democrats for opposing health care bill
It was the latest signs of high-stakes maneuvering over a key campaign promise, and the president signaled a willingness to deal. Referring to Republican senators opposed to the bill, he added: "They want to get some points, I think they'll get some points".

On April 15, Hodgkinson participated in a tax reform protest.

Sanders immediately denounced the shooter's actions on the day. He was a volunteer on the presidential campaign for Sen.

A Sanders' spokesman said Wednesday he was reviewing office records to confirm the visit.

Slater says he specifically targeted GOP members and he goes on to say, "While the shooter was not known to have a diagnosed history of mental illness, he is known, or was known to have an anger management problem". Hodgkinson was unemployed, his 30-year marriage was not "going so well", he "suffered from taking some prescription medication" and was running out of money, the Federal Bureau of Investigation agent said.

James Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Illinois, opened fire last Wednesday at the baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia, wounding Republican leader Steve Scalise, authorities say.

The Majority Whip was struck in the hip and the bullet shattered blood vessels, bones and internal organs along the way.

On Saturday, Scalise's status was upgraded from "critical" to "serious" after his third operation.

Scalise, 51, "continues to make good progress", according to a statement issued Wednesday by MedStar Washington Hospital Center, "and is beginning an extended period of healing and rehabilitation". All five people who were shot, including two U.S. Capitol police officers, survived their injuries. Also wounded were Zach Barth, a staff member for Representative Roger Williams of Texas, and Matt Mika, a lobbyist for Tyson Foods and a former congressional aide.
