"It is incredibly emotional working in there, but we will do it with our utmost professionalism, and we will do everything we can as quickly as we can to locate and recover everybody who is in there", Cundy said.

Cundy said earlier on Monday that due to conditions in the tower, which "verge on indescribable", it could takes weeks to locate bodies and there was a likelihood some of those lost would never be properly identified.

"We will go where the evidence may take us", and do everything possible "to ensure that those responsible will be brought to justice", he said.

"If I identify.an issue that is a risk to public safety, we will be sharing that immediately with the relevant authorities", he said.

One firefighter, in his black protective suit with FIRE emblazoned in yellow on the back, embraced a distraught woman who had photos of a missing person printed on her top.

Cundy warned that the toll of 79 people could change.

"I believe there may be people who were in Grenfell Tower that people may not know are missing and may not have realised they were in there on the night", he said.

May and her ministers have said they will do all they can to help those left homeless after the blaze and make sure other high-rise buildings, usually home to poorer people, are checked and safe.
