According to the report, the test was conducted on Wednesday near the North's Dongchangri missile test site.

In the survey by the National Unification Advisory Council, 76.9 percent of respondents said South Korea should restore dialogue channels with North Korea as part of efforts to play a leading role in the resolution of the North Korean nuclear problem.

Mike Elleman, the senior fellow for missile defense at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, said that North Korea may have started to domestically produce a rocket engine it better understands and can more quickly integrate into weapons.

"We watch North Korea's actions closely".

Defiant North Korea has conducted another rocket engine test that can be used for an intercontinental ballistic missile or ICBM capable enough of reaching the USA mainland.

South Korean officials did not have details about the reported test and declined to comment on the possible nature of the engine.

The South Korean leader is set to hold a first summit meeting with his US counterpart Donald Trump in Washington next week, with the threat posed by North Korea set to feature high on their agenda. The North also conducted two nuclear tests past year alone as it openly pursues a long-range nuclear missile that could reach the United States mainland.

However, during the campaign, Trump was largely spared criticism from North Korea - in one instance, a state media outlet praised him as "wise".
