Do Jong-hwan, South Korea's newly appointed sports minister, said last week he would ask Chang for his support in securing North Korea's participation in the PyeongChang Olympics, which kicks off in February 2018.

Early this month, two of four crew members of a North Korean fishing boat which drifted to the South refused to return home.

Providing a stark example of Moon's two-track approach on the North, in which the administration said it would criticize Pyongyang's weapons program while trying to engage in dialogue and cooperation in the private sector, South Korea's Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon spared no time to denounce the regime Sunday during his remarks in a local ceremony celebrating the 67th anniversary of the break of the Korean War.

One idea was for North Korea to host some skiing competitions at the Games.

Also high on the agenda is likely to be a controversial USA missile defence system that has been installed in South Korea to guard against missile threats from the North. "South Korea must realize that following psychopath Trump...will only lead to disaster", wrote the paper.

But South Korea had suspending the further deployment of the system until an environmental assessment was completed.

Right now, with two THAAD batteries in place, the North Koreans could do the simple arithmetic and decide to attack with more missiles than the 16 we have, overwhelming the deployed batteries.

But analysts say the South Korean leader - whose parents were refugees evacuated from the North by U.S. forces - will endeavour in Washington to portray their decades-old alliance as intact.

But Moon has repeatedly denied such claims, especially during his recent set of interviews with the USA media, stressing that he was not seeking for a fundamental chance in the deployment plan.

The United States has tried for years to discourage South Korea from developing longer-range ballistic missiles in keeping with the Missile Technology Control Regime, a voluntary worldwide arms-control pact.

Moon told Reuters in an exclusive interview on Thursday that strong new sanctions would be needed if the North conducted a new nuclear test or an intercontinental ballistic missile test and that he planned to call on Chinese President Xi Jinping to play a greater role in reining in Pyongyang's arms program.

Pyongyang broke its silence about the death of 22-year-old American college student Otto Warmbier, buried Thursday in his OH hometown.

Pyongyang newspaper claims that U.S. president Trump is trying to distract from his "tough situation" back home.

The soldier expressed his desire to defect when he reached the guard post and was questioned by the South Korean Army officers before being presented to the Ministry of Unification authorities, in charge of managing defections.
