Solange, Migos win at BET Awards; Bruno Mars performs

The BET Awards 17 have concluded and as usual, fans and critics alike kept things moving on social media with the running commentary.

The lengthy, performance-packed show was helmed by comic Leslie Jones, whose opening monologue riffing on being "old school" was a more than fitting introduction to a night that largely celebrated the legacy and influence of "90s R&B".

Bruno Mars's epic performance at the BET Awards might have tuckered him out.

Solange turned 31 on Saturday and is nominated for video of the year at the performance-packed ceremony.

Kendrick Lamar also earned a loud applause when he joined Future for the Top 5 pop hit, "Mask Off". "I'm excited to see them together, which I haven't seen in so long".

Prior to Xscape's anticipated BET Awards performance, HipHollywood caught up with Zonnique on the red carpet of the main event to talk about the lea- up to her famous mom's triumphant return.

"This is overwhelming", said the recording artist, who was praised for giving back to the public schools in his native hometown of Chicago. "Time and time again, he has been standing up, speaking out and doing the work to get kids in our community to get the education they deserve".

An energetic Bruno Mars kicked off the show with a fun and funky performance of the song, "Perm". Mars, Migos and Solange are nominated for video of the year along with Beyonce and Big Sean.

New Edition was recognized with a lifetime achievement award. The cast including Bryshere Gray and Luke James gave musical tributes to the group before coming onstage to accept their award.

Chance also delivered a moving speech, saying we need to release all imprisoned marijuana dealers before making the drug legal, and saying how he wants to be a better father and uncle.

"I first and foremost have to say that my peer group is the most wonderful", she said. And after eight years, fans received a handsome experience - a lovely album full of growth and a confident voice we always knew was there.

Mars later went on to win Best Male R&B/Pop Artist at the awards show.

Last night the "Formation" performer took home an incredible five BET Awards, including Album of the Year for her critically acclaimed sixth studio album Lemonade, Video of the Year for its second single "Sorry" and Best Female R&B/Pop Artist. Hill also received onscreen kudos for his work on "The New Edition Story" mini-series. Album of the Year, Best Collaboration, Sportsman of the Year, Best Actor, and Best Video of the Year are just a few that didn't make the program.

Bringing the show to a close was DJ Khaled, as he brought out Chance the Rapper and Lil Wayne for his track "I'm the One".
