King Felipe, 49, is thought to raise the issue of Gibraltar during his visit this week and will deliver an address at Westminmster from the Royal Gallery to parliamentarians today before meeting Theresa May for talks at Downing Street tomorrow.

Mr Rosindell looked on as King Felipe said in the traditional address to both Houses of Parliament that Britain and Spain have a long-shared history and have "frequently stood shoulder to shoulder" as friends, partners and allies, in the best interests of both nations.

He said: "I am certain that [through] this [work and determination we can] resolve to overcome our differences in the case of Gibraltar". Spain ceded Gibraltar in perpetuity in 1713.

In response, Chief Minister Picardo accused Spain of ignoring Gibraltar's voice, and that it should be the most important during talks about its own future.

He said any Brexit deal must give the thousands of his compatriots in Britain - and United Kingdom expats in Spain - "sufficient assurance and certainty" over their futures.

Picardo also said the King's comments suggested he was treating Gibraltar as something that could be "traded from one monarch to another", like a "pawn in a chess game, reports the Gibraltar Chronicle".

Although Article 50, launching the Brexit procedure, is yet to be triggered, Gibraltar has already embarked on an effort to convince the EU that the territory needs a special arrangement in the EU-UK divorce deal.

King Felipe said Brexit "saddens" Spain but that it "fully respects" the will of the British people.

The king added that the thousands of Spaniards and Britons living in both countries "form a sound foundation for our relations".
