Introspect why India's relations with neighbours have nosedived: Opposition to NDA government

Following the government briefing, leaders of political parties also advised the government to consider why India's relations with most of its neighbours had nosedived in the past three years, be it with China, or with Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal.

Opposition leaders were supportive of the Indian position that China has violated the commitments arrived at through the special representatives' dialogue, with Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav, a former defence minister, saying China betrayed Nehru and would behave similarly with the NDA government if it let its guard down. For Congress, security and national interest are paramount.

"We said that on issues of national security and integrity of the country, we are with the government", Trinamool leader Derek O'Brien said.

"The party reiterates that on issues of India's security, the entire country has to act as a unified pole". Some of the opposition leaders later said they didn't get satisfactory answers.

Leaders of prominent opposition parties including the Congress are present at the meeting being held at Rajnath's residence.

On the Sikkim sector stand-off, the Foreign Secretary said that "Chinese military is in violation and that Doklam is Bhutanese territory and India is protecting Bhutan's interest".

"The parties also recognised the unique nature of very close and longstanding India-Bhutan relationship", Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Gopal Baglay said after the meeting.

While Rahul accused Modi of pursuing policies that created space for terrorists in Kashmir, his party stated that previous Congress-led UPA regime had always kept the Opposition in loop on such critical issues.

In Jammu and Kashmir, seven pilgrims were killed by militants in Anantnag district while returning from Amarnath cave shrine last Monday.

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, who is scheduled to visit Beijing for the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) NSAs meet later this month, was also present at the meeting.
