It's been a big month of milestones for the royal family.

The party was the second celebration of Camilla's birthday, which falls on Monday 17 July.

Camilla celebrated becoming a septuagenarian with two parties over the last week and held a garden party for her staff and her many charities on Thursday at Clarence House in London.

Twelve years after their controversial civil wedding, which followed years of public rancour over their relationship, the portrait makes clear that they are very much a partnership of equals as they move, albeit reluctantly, ever closer to the throne.

The picture, which was taken in May, was captured by celebrity photographer Mario Testino at Clarence House. The Duchess can be seen wearing a smart navy coat by one of her favourite designers, Fiona Clare, which she accessorised with a pearl necklace and earrings.

Family portrait: Testino was also invited to take this photograph for Princess Charlotte's Christening.

He added: "I'm honoured to document their royal highnesses the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall on this very important date".

The Peruvian photographer said that when he first met Camilla, more than a decade ago, he "discovered a kind and lovely person with a wonderful sense of humour".

Her 70th birthday has brought renewed interest in Camilla, probably quite overwhelming for a woman who is more than happy to stay out of the limelight when she can.

'The image is one of several that was taken that day.

Royal Central will be providing special coverage of the Duchess of Cornwall's birthday throughout the day.

The private party on Saturday at Highgrove for 250 friends and family, thrown for Camilla by husband Charles, the Prince of Wales, was attended by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge as well as Prince Harry, The Telegraph reported.

The couple have come a long way since Princess Diana identified Camilla as the "third person" in her marriage to Charles.
