And so, general manager Dave Gettleman set out to do just that, drafting Christian McCaffery, Curtis Samuel, and Taylor Moton - two play-making back/receivers and an offensive linemen - in the first two rounds.

"After much thought and a long evaluation of our football operations, I have made a decision to relieve Gettleman of his duties as general manager", Richardson said in a press release Monday.

Only four teams - the New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos and Green Bay Packers - won more playoff games than the Panthers (three victories) did in Dave Gettleman's four seasons.

Despite the on-field success, the Panthers struggled to retain popular veterans under Gettleman. Richardson also acknowledged the timing is not ideal as the Panthers are scheduled to report to camp on July 26. As a scout and front office executive, he's been part of three championship teams and nine conference champion teams.

Gettleman held the position since 2013.

The Panthers went 6-10 previous year, but Carolina's recent draft was hailed by critics.

But trouble began brewing last offseason when star cornerback Josh Norman had his franchise tag rescinded and was allowed to walk in free agency, ultimately signing with Washington.

Gettleman served as the Giants' pro personnel director from 1999-2011 and was their senior pro personnel analyst in 2012.
