Death toll climbs to 59, over 10 lakh affected : Assam floods

According to a report by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), three persons lost their lives in Morigaon district of Central Assam.

Death toll in the Assam floods increased to 66 with five more bodies retrieved on Monday.

Currently, the Brahmaputra was flowing above the danger mark at Dhubri town.

Across the state, 10,99,141 animals and poultry have been affected by the flood waters, the agency said.

Reviewing the situation in a video-conference with the DCs, he asked them to take steps for repairing and rebuilding houses that were damaged fully or partially by floods.

Speaking to the media Governor Purohit assured that the issue of release of dam water by NEEPCOs Ranganadi Hydro Electrical Power plant at Yazali in Arunachal Pradesh, which added misery to the flood situation in North Lakhimpur, would be investigated by experts. This has caused panic, especially as several thousand people in the district had only last week suffered major loss of property, crop and animals because of a similar water release by NEEPCO. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal directed all Deputy Commissioners (DC) to ensure that every family affected by current flood in the state is provided relief materials without delay.

The chief minister directed the DCs to take measures for preventing any criminal activity from taking place at the flood affected areas as well as the relief camps under direct supervision of Superintendents of Police (SP) of the districts.

"Farmers in the flood affected areas should be provided quality seeds for cultivation in coordination with the district agriculture officers", he said.

Assam Finance and Education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said the state government has chose to provide textbooks to the flood affected students within the month of August, those lost their textbooks in the flood. On Monday, popular singer and musician Zubeen Garg launched a road-show to collect funds and relief materials for the flood-affected people, while Northeast Frontier Railway offered 2500 cartons of packaged drinking water bottles.
