In a desperate attempt to promote his money-burning auto firm, attention-starved Musk attended a gathering of United States governors this weekend to preach about the day of reckoning aka artificial intelligence (AI).

The mere fact that Musk has sounded such a strong and specific warning shows how risky he believes our times really are. "AI is [the] rare case in which we have to be proactive in regulation instead of reactive", he said. Because by the time we are reactive with AI regulation, it's too late. "It takes forever. That, in the past, has been bad but not something which represented a fundamental risk to the existence of civilization".

Those are solid words from a man once in awhile connected with cyber-libertarianism, an intensely hostile to direction belief system exemplified by any semblance of Peter Thiel, who helped to establish Paypal with Musk.

He added that what he believes is the current model of regulation by governments is to try and take control of the situation once "a whole bunch of bad things happen".

After earlier advising politicians that outdated laws need to be relaxed in order to facilitate innovation, Musk admitted that he favors government regulation when it comes to robot technology. "AI is a fundamental, existential risk to human civilisation and I don't think people fully appreciate that". I'm increasingly inclined to think there should be some regulatory oversight at the national and worldwide level, just to make sure that we don't do something very foolish.

Musk also argued that regulation is important so that AI companies' respective developments can be paused and then analyzed to make sure they're safe.

Among Musk and others, they have argued that the technology has the potential to be a long-term threat for humanity, due to the possibility that AI that could reach the point where it could become smarter and faster than human intelligence.

"[They] could start a war by doing fake news and spoofing email accounts and fake press releases, and just by manipulating information".

"November or December of this year, we should be able to go all the way from a parking lot in California to a parking lot in NY with no controls touched in the entire journey." said Musk from TED 2017 earlier this year.

"The pen is mightier than the sword", he said.
