A secret tunnel was discovered underneath the Quleiat neighbourhood in the Old City, an Iraqi counter-terrorism official told dpa on Saturday.

It was at Mosul's historic Grand al-Nuri Mosque where IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi declared a "caliphate" in Syria and Iraq.

Mosul fell under the control of the Islamic State jihadist group in mid-2014, in a blitz that saw Islamic State forces overrun large swaths of Iraq and Syria.

"The women had weapons and explosive belts meant for attacking Iraqi troops" and included citizens of Germany, Russia, the Russian region of Chechnya, Turkey, Canada, Libya, and Syria, an official said.

After eight months of hard urban warfare, Iraqi military forces on June 29 captured the Mosul mosque at the heart of the strategic northern city, where Daesh had declared its de facto capital.

On Monday, Iraq's Prime Minister Haider Abadi declared the liberation of Mosul, which had been held by ISIL terrorists for three years.

The Mosul offensive has taken much longer than expected, with Iraqi government advances slowed by the need to avoid civilian casualties.

"We have another mission ahead of us, to create stability, to build and clear ISIS cells, and that requires an intelligence and security effort, and the unity which enabled us to fight ISIS", he said before raising an Iraqi flag.

He predicted that the events which led to the failure of terrorists who are backed by the U.S. and the reactionary regimes in the region will also happen in Syria, Yemen and other countries which have come under attack. Mosul's eastern part was liberated by Iraqi and US-led coalition forces in late January.
