Plane's tyre BURSTS during take-off at London Gatwick airport

An airport spokeswoman said the runway was temporarily closed twice - first when the plane was in the air, and again after it landed - to carry out precautionary safety checks. The main runway is now operational but delays are occurring.

Gatiwkc Airport has ground to a standstill after the Toronto-bound Air Canada flight hit debris on the runway which burst its wheels on take-off at around 1pm.

Passengers then had to wait while staff informed them hotels would be made available.

Flights are now using Gatwick's back-up runway and the airport has warned of delays and some cancellations.

The damaged tyre of the flight can be clearly seen in this photo taken be one of the passengers.

Twitter has been awash with passengers stuck on flights unable to leave.

"We apologise as some flights will be delayed as a result and a few arriving flights are likely to be diverted to other airports".

A flight of Air Canada Rouge, making the link between London and Toronto was forced to make a u-turn to return to land emergency at the airport of London-Gatwick airport after a tyre had burst on take-off of the device.

It has apologised for any inconvenience caused. Passengers should check with their airline before travelling to the airport for information about their specific flight.
