Smash Bros Modders' New Game Looks an Awful Lot Like Smash Bros

Brawl that many players immensely prefer over the original version, have officially revealed their next game, and those who enjoyed the first project will be happy to hear that it is indeed a fighting game once again. Super Smash Bros Melee is a notable absence as well, despite what is now a solidly locked continual presence on the main Evo stage.

Icons: Combat Arena, as the new game is known, is set to be free-to-play, and is the work of Wavedash Games, a studio consisting of both former Project M developers and new talent from all across the games industry.

In Project M, the gameplay of the Wii game Super Smash Bros.

Central Fiction, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, and Arms round out the rest of the Evo Japan lineup.

Melee finals occurred at EVO 2017, fighting game fans and spectators alike were greeted with an unexpected surprise from Wavedash Games.

Wavedash are listening to the communities feedback, which as of now is highly critical of its identical gameplay style to Smash as well as mass disapproval with the game's audio and visuals, and the team will be tweaking the game to accommodate this feedback. However, one thing that may have factored into the mod's termination was the group's announcement of new projects being built "from the ground up", with Icons: Combat Arena likely being the game that ceased Project M's production. At the time of writing, the trailer has about as many thumbs down as it does up.

The Icons: Combat Arena open beta will be open to all fighters this Fall.

But YouTube comments are hardly the place to go for serious discussions about the game, and Icons: Combat Arena is having much better luck with the game's Twitter and Subreddit where more content can be seen, such as reassuring gifs like this one.
