Udta Punjab wins big at IIFA awards

The actors were given away the prestigious IIFA Awards for their brilliant performance in "Udta Punjab".

The hijacker in Neerja won the IIFA award for his cruel portrayal of a terrorist who ends up killing Nerja.

Over 40,000 people cheered for their favourite Bollywood stars as they walked the IIFA Green Carpet ahead of the awards ceremony at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

As hosts, Karan Johar and Saif Ali Khan attempted to keep the humour alive, but beyond a point, the crowd wasn't very engaged and booed them in between. In fact, Salman, Katrina, Alia, Sushant Singh Rajput, Kriti Sanon and Varun also performed at the main event and set the stage on fire with their performances.

It is an open secret now that the award of the Best Actor is grabbed by none other than Shahid Kapoor for "Udta Punjab" in which he portrayed the character of a drug abusing rock star. Neerja received the best film of the year award while the best direction award went to Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury for his much-acclaimed film "Pink", a female-centric court room drama.

Jim Sarbh who was last seen in Sushant Singh starrer Raabta was given best actor in a negative role trophy for his role in Neerja.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil dominated the music categories. Amit Mishra won best playback (male) for "Ae Dil Hai Mushkil', Kanika Kapoor and Tulsi Kumar shared the best female playback for "Udta Punjab" and "Airlift" respectively, while Pritam won best music director for "Ae Dil Hai Mushkil".

The John Abraham-Varun Dhawan starrer might not have earned a great amount of moolah at the box office but it has surely won Varun and award for his comic timing.

Disha Patani and Punjabi star Diljit Dosanjh won their first ever IIFA awards for their debut Hindi films M S Dhoni and Udta Punjab, respectively.

Anupam Kher won the award for Best Actor in Supporting Role (Male) for his performance in M.S. Dhoni: An Untold Story while Shabana Azmi bagged the Best Actor in Supporting Role (Female) for her performance in Neerja.
