Voting for 14th President of India Begins

Members of Parliament and legislators who will vote to elect the next President on Monday have been barred from carrying their personal pens inside the voting chamber and will have to mark their ballot with a specially-designed marker, the Election Commission (EC) said on Sunday.

The panel has also permitted 14 Rajya Sabha members including Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, Trinamool Congress' Derek O'Brien and Mukul Roy to vote in legislative assemblies.

The President is elected through an electoral college that comprises MPs and State and Union Territory MLAs. The vote value of an MLA from Assam is 116.

Among them, a total of 993 members have serious criminal cases against them.

The opposition's presidential nominee, Meira Kumar, today met the Congress MPs and MLAs from Himachal Pradesh and urged them to use their "conscience" while voting in the July 17 election to the country's top constitutional post.

Born on 31 March 1945 (72) in Patna, Bihar is a former Lawyer, Politician and Diplomat.

If elected, 71-year-old Kovind will be the second Dalit to become President after K.R. Narayanan, who was the 10th President.
