The third and fourth in line to the British throne joined their parents - the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge - on the five-day tour of Europe undertaken by the royals on the request of the United Kingdom s Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).

In Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel will hold a private meeting with the royal couple in Berlin before they visit the Brandenburg Gate, a symbol of German unification.

William, second-in-line to the throne, and Kate will visit the Warsaw Uprising museum which commemorates a 1944 battle against Nazi German occupiers, in which tens of thousands died and the city was bombed and razed to the ground.

They will also tour the site of Gdansk's shipyards, the birthplace of Poland's Solidarity movement, which helped topple Communist rule.

William and Kate will head opposing rowing teams in the race with crews from Cambridge and Heidelberg.
