McConnell delays health care vote while McCain recovers from surgery

McCain underwent surgery in Phoenix on Friday to remove a blood clot from above his left eye. He is recovering at home in Arizona.

A revised draft of the Senate's Better Care Reconciliation Act of 2017 (BCRA) was released Thursday, and new spending and coverage estimates from the Congressional Budget Office are expected to be released Monday.

"I have never known a man more tenacious and resilient than John McCain", Flake said. There is no excuse to shut down debate over the bill before it can even begin.

With the Democrats solidly opposed to the legislation, the Republicans can only pass the bill if 50 of 52 members back it and if Republican Vice President Mike Pence casts his tiebreaking vote in favor.

"There are about eight to 10 Republican senators who have serious concerns about this bill. And so at the end of the day, I don't know whether it will pass".

"AARP also remains alarmed at the Senate bill's drastic Medicaid cuts". McConnell can not lose any others for the legislation to survive a showdown vote.

McConnell had been in a rush to get the bill to a vote, in part because it was thought more time wouldn't help and could hurt the chance for passage.

With the vote set for the coming week now indefinitely postponed, GOP success in its long-promised Obamacare repeal grows all the more uncertain, despite heavy lobbying in recent days by Trump administration officials.

"While John is recovering, the Senate will continue our work on legislative items and nominations, and will defer consideration of the Better Care Act", McConnell said in a statement he posted to Twitter. He has already said the Senate will work through the first two weeks of the August recess, citing a need to finish a slate of unfinished business.

When asked at a Sunday news briefing about Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's decision to delay the health care, White House director of media affairs Helen Aguirre Ferre (ah-GEE'-ray feh-RAY') replied: "We wish Sen".

"I believe as soon as we have a full contingent of senators, that we'll have that vote", he said.

That procedural vote could have come as early as Tuesday. "The BCRA will make health care less available or affordable, especially for our most vulnerable Idahoans: Our children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing conditions".

But Senate Republicans have been seeking to overhaul health care and deliver on the party's promise to repeal President Barack Obama's health care law, which they've been pledging to do since its 2010 enactment.
