SC teen reportedly gave birth, dumped baby in bathroom trash can

A woman and her mother were arrested in SC after police said a newborn baby fell out of a trash bag at a restaurant, where they both work.

According to the Greenville Police Department, 18-year-old Estela Ruiz-Gomez, a worker at the restaurant, had complained of stomach pain during her shift before visiting the bathroom.

Police said that another employee was emptying the trash and taking it across the parking lot when it ripped open. The bag tore, and a newborn baby fell out and onto the pavement, Bragg said.

The baby had a heartbeat and was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later, according to Bragg.

Ruiz-Gomez was arrested and charged Tuesday with homicide by child neglect. It's not known if they have lawyers.

The medical examiner performed an autopsy and could not find a medical reason why the child died but noted that dirt and gravel were found on the newborn's body.

The spokesman added: 'When Deputy Coroners Dill and Edmonds returned to the restaurant for further investigation, other employees told them a different version of events than the original one provided the day of the incident.

TV station WLOS reported Estela Ruiz-Gomez, the baby's mother, busses tables at the restaurant, and Lorenza Gomez Rodriguez, the baby's grandmother, was a dishwasher.

The manager told Lorenza Gomez Rodriguez to check on her. Lorenza exited the bathroom and said Estella need to go to the hospital.

The baby's father was there when the baby fell out and took him back inside the restaurant.

Estela Ruiz-Gomez, 19, of Taylors, was charged Tuesday with homicide by child abuse, according to an arrest warrant.

The medical examiner said the baby's death would be ruled a homicide because he would have likely survived if he hadn't been put in the trash.

Authorities said Ruiz-Gomez was in the country illegally in 2016 when we she was ordered to leave, and Homeland Security is investigating both suspects' immigration status.
